All I Want For Christmas is… a Personal Protection Order!

Man clenching fist

It may come as a shock to you, but the holiday season isn’t a time of good cheer for everyone. In fact, for some families, the Christmas season brings unique stresses and burdens that make life especially challenging. So while we’re all home with our loved ones on Christmas day, exchanging gifts, sipping hot cocoa and singing carols, there are many parents who will need help to keep both themselves and their children safe.

Christmas can be a very stressful time for some!

Think about it. This season, with all of it’s beauty and intentions of goodwill, can be extremely stressful for families who live on tight budgets. Kids these days are surrounded with info about all the many toys and devices they’re told they should have. But for a family with a small income and very little extra cash to support lavish gift giving, those items are well beyond reach. And the stress that comes with not being able to give your loved ones the gifts they so dearly want can be heartbreaking.

Many factors contribute to family violence during the holidays.

Add bad weather (which ramps up the heating bill), increased sickness, social pressures, and maybe even substance abuse issues to the mix, and you have a recipe for disaster. Oh and then there’s the fact that the kids are home from school. And because of the cold, everyone is cooped up inside together, getting under each other’s skin and rubbing one another the wrong way. Now throw in that spiked punch bowl at the family Christmas get together, and the rising tensions between family members who only tolerate one another at this once-a-year event.. You get the picture.

Statistics show that domestic violence rises at this time of year.

There have been several studies done over the years which reveal that instances of domestic violence rise significantly over the holidays. However, while you might think that Christmas day is the worst culprit, you’d be surprised to know that it’s actually new year’s day that takes the cake. January 1st is most often the date with the highest number of domestic violence encounters reported to police here in the U.S.

If kids are involved it gets even worse – for everyone!

In families where domestic violence is an ongoing issue, kids only complicate the situation. If the cops are called to a home on a domestic violence report, and there are children in the house, those responding officers often call CPS as a matter of routine. And once CPS is involved, it only gets more complicated from there. Families dealing with domestic violence can suddenly find themselves facing the lost of their children as well, and the involvement of the court in their parenting choices.
