Separating Kids From Their Parents Causes Trauma! (Pt 1)

Family picture being torn apart
Unfair visitation and custody agreements punish children as much as parents!

One of the greatest challenges faced by divorcing parents in Michigan is separation from their children. Ending a marriage often means you go from seeing your kids every day, to seeing them a few days out of each week, or worse – only a few hours every week. But what many people don’t realize is that while this is very hard for parents, it’s actually even harder for the kids! Being separated from their parents has actually been proven to be traumatizing for a child.

What are the effects of separating a child from their parents?

The Children’s Rights Litigation Committee of the American Bar Association Section of Litigation has prepared a document that details the many studies that support these facts. According to current research, separation from parents has both short- and long-term devastating effects on a child’s mental and physical well-being.

Effects on the psychological and emotional wellbeing of children include:

  • Severe anxiety,
  • Depression,
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and
  • Toxic stress
  • Cognitive development delays

But how could a child be physically impacted by a separation from their parents or caregivers? It makes sense that kids would be impacted emotionally, but surely there can’t be actual physical effects? Well, believe it or not, a growing body of research is proving that there is little separation between the mind and body. Traumas and tragedies that affect the body have a direct impact on the mind and vice versa!

Toxic stress has a direct impact on your physical health!

A child who is separated from their parents, even for a short period of time, can suffer enormous physical harm as a result of the damage done to their brain and organs by the stress-induced release of hormones. According to the Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University, toxic stress “can disrupt the development of brain architecture and other organ systems, and increase the risk for stress-related disease and cognitive impairment, well into the adult years.”

Keeping families together is critical if the next generation is to be healthy!
