The 3 Most Common Questions Our Lawyers Get Asked During The Initial Consultation

Over the decades we’ve been practicing family law in and around the Lansing area, and helping the people with divorce and custody concerns in Lansing, Ingham County, Charlotte and Eaton County and St Johns and Clinton County, we’ve met with a lot of people. We’ve discussed a lot of scenarios, been told a lot of details, and been asked a lot of questions. While the people’s lives may differ from one case to the next, what never seems to change is the questions that are asked of our family law attorneys. Most people have the same worries and concerns. So we thought we’d share a few of those with our readers, in the hopes of maybe answering a few of your questions.

An attorney's hands, as he takes notes on his client's case during an initial consultation.

What most people want to know during the initial consultation:

Who will be handling my case?

The attorney you meet with during your initial consultation (if you decide to hire them) is likely to be the one handling your case. However, that attorney doesn’t work alone. In addition to the paralegals and other support staff that help our attorneys do their jobs here at The Kronzek Firm, our team of attorneys works together. We meet regularly as a group to discuss cases, get and give advice to one another, and ask for insight when we need it. Multiple pairs of eyes can see things that only one pair may miss. Multiple minds can think about a situation in a variety of ways, providing opportunities to think outside the box. This benefits your case, because many well trained legal minds are all working together towards the best possible outcome in your unique situation. In short, you will have access to our entire team and one specific attorney will take the lead.

How much is this going to cost me?

At the initial consultation, we will explain our rates, and give you a range for what we expect your case will cost. However, keep in mind that we can’t tell the future, and we can’t plan for every possible issue that may crop up along the way. You can certainly help keep the cost down by promptly providing any information and documentation that your attorney needs, and by being honest and upfront about everything your attorney discusses with you. Lying, hiding information, being sneaky, and not providing all the facts your attorney needs to best represent your case will slow the process down considerably, which ends up adding to your costs. Of course other things that will affect the cost of your case are your spouse, your spouse’s attorney, the degree of bickering that occurs, the amount of work to be done on your case, and the judge that is assigned to your case. We are happy to discuss all of these variables with you.

Can you get me what I want?

This is a tricky one. Lawyers aren’t magicians and we don’t have a crystal ball. We don’t have magic wands and we can’t grant wishes. Just because you want something, doesn’t mean you’re going to get it, and you should be extremely leery of any attorney who tells you you’ll get everything you want in the divorce. An attorney doesn’t have the power to make a final decision about what items each person gets to keep when a couple splits, or choose who gets custody of the kids. Whenever our clients ask us this, we tell them that we will do everything in our power to get them the best possible outcome, but we can’t promise anything, nor is it ethical for any attorney to make promises about the outcome of a case. Because that’s the truth. And we don’t ever lie to our clients, or give them false hope. Our truth is that we have handled thousands of cases over the last 27 years. The majority of our clients have come from Lansing and the surrounding areas. We have a strong track record for getting our clients good results. We don’t work miracles, but we do work hard and smart for our clients.
