Don’t Drop The Ball on Your Divorce!

If you want your divorce to go off without a hitch, you need to keep your eye on the ball!

For some people, the thought of waiting 60 days for their divorce to go through is an eternity! They want to pack up, move out, and move on, putting that failed relationship behind them. For others, they know right from the start that they’re in for a long, rocky ride, with loads of arguments and backbiting along the way.

Whatever your situation, we understand what you’re up against – we’ve helped thousands of couples through their divorces in Michigan, and we know just how slow, and frustrating the system can seem. But there are things you can do to help make the process smoother, and in some cases faster, that many people don’t realize. So here are some tips you need to keep in mind.

  1. Stay in touch with your divorce attorney!

If your attorney calls because there is a specific piece of info missing from the paperwork you turned in, or because they have an important question for you, not checking your voicemail for days won’t help speed the process up. Stay on top of your email and voicemail so that you can keep the ball rolling.

  1. Respond promptly to all requests for info!

Respond to calls quickly, and when your attorney asks for something specific – a birth certificate or a bank statement, for example, try to get it to them as soon as possible! The longer your attorney has to wait, the slower your divorce process is going to be! Sometimes an attorney only needs one piece of data in order to file a motion, and having to wait days, or even weeks, for you to give it to them can delay everything significantly!

  1. Be involved in all aspects of the divorce!

We understand that there are some parts of the divorce process that are unpleasant or uncomfortable for you. Certain meetings you’d rather not attend, or particular hearings you don’t feel like going to, might be very important! The more involved you are, the faster and smoother this process will be. So make every effort to stay involved.

  1. Don’t drag your feet when it comes to money!

Divorce is a stressful time. You have all kinds of extra obligations on your plate right now, but don’t let that keep you from taking care of business. Make sure you pay your bills on time, and deal with those unpleasant but important issues, like finding a new place to live and getting a separate bank account. It may seem like you are drowning in paperwork, but not doing what needs to be done can slow down your divorce process, and end up costing you more money in the end!

Testimonials

When I first called Charles he gave me the honest opinion I needed. We met the same day and I hired him to take over my divorce case from another lawyer. In 3 months he got me what my previous lawyer did not get me after a year. Charles is the best.
