Rules to Help Your Divorce go More Smoothly (Pt 2)

Hey there and welcome back to our chat about how to keep your divorce moving smoothly with a few basic rules. As we pointed out in the previous article, divorces are going to be time consuming and stressful pretty much from the get-go.

So anything you can do to make the process easier on you and your kids is a good thing, right? Getting back to our list of tips to make the whole thing less unpleasant for everyone, we looked at keeping your kids interests front and center, being as fair as possible, and not picking fights with your spouse. Moving on, here’s the wrap up…

4. Keep communication channels open

This doesn’t refer to communication with one specific person, but rather in general. Communicate with your kids (in an age appropriate way, obviously) about what’s going on and how it’s going to affect their lives. Talk to your attorney and make sure they have all the information they need, when they need it. And if you’re seeing a therapist, be open with them about your feelings so you can work through what’s happening and move towards healing.

However, there are situations where being open about all the details isn’t always the best option. And by that, we mean your spouse. Now, don’t misunderstand us. We are definitely not saying you should lie! But your attorney might encourage you not to discuss certain things with your spouse, or to keep certain information under wraps during the divorce process. And if that’s the case, you should definitely follow their advice!

5. Be honest

Being dishonest is never a good idea, but during a divorce it can cause a lot of problems for you that you might not even realize are possible. For example, not declaring all of your assets (essentially hiding assets) during the disclosure portion of the divorce process can get you into a lot of trouble with the court!

If the judge finds out you’ve been keeping a little something aside so that you don’t have to share it with your spouse, you can get penalized. And by that, we mean you could lose a lot of your assets if the Judge decides your dishonesty should be punished by taking things away from you and giving them to your ex instead. So always be honest and open, especially with your divorce attorney. It’s not worth it to be sneaky during a divorce.

6. Get professional help

Divorce is a very challenging process, and you’re going to need all the help you can get. If you or your children are struggling with the changes happening right now, or are wrestling with a lot of anger or sorrow, we recommend that you find a therapist or counselor who can help you work through that.

Having unresolved anger, or struggling with depression, can make it difficult to keep a clear head when making choices. This can affect the outcome of your divorce in the long run. So having a professional who can help you with coping strategies, and emotional management can make a big difference in how this entire process unfolds for you and your children.

Hiring a great attorney is very important as well!
